UPR and advocacy in Geneva

UPR and advocacy in Geneva

The work of the Nicaragua Project has focused on advocacy for the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in the first semester of 2024, which this year corresponds to Nicaragua.

We started with a training process in conjunction with the OHCHR and continued with support in advising Civil Society reports to be submitted to the Human Rights Council and in advocacy actions towards the international community.

Three organisations accompanied by PBI have prepared reports on their specialised topics: political prisoners and those released from prison, the rights of women and defenders, the right to education and academic freedom.

Furthermore, we are proud to announce that a young woman defender from the accompanied organization, CUDJ - Coordinadora Universitaria por la Democracia y la Justicia, has been selected by UPR Info to participate in Geneva. She will be part of a delegation of Nicaraguan human rights defenders who will tour Geneva during the last week of August and will be accompanied by PBI. This tour, which will also include the participation of an accompanied defender from GREX - Group of Former Political Prisoners - is being organized in coordination with more than ten Nicaraguan organizations in exile and three international organizations.

As we look ahead, the UPR-Nicaragua will take place in November. We are committed to following this process in the next semester and will keep you informed about the results, ensuring that you are involved in the project’s direction.
